Monsanto has applied to commercially release Bt cotton in Malawi. Currently only 3 African countries grow genetically modified cotton – South Africa (since 1997), Burkina Faso (2008) and Sudan (2013).
Malawian civil society has come out very strongly against the permit application and has submitted a substantial objection to Malawian authorities. There were many problems in the scientific safety data, and socio-economic impacts were not considered at all.
