Turkish based organisation Cansuyu on Monday held iftaar program with Muslim children at Madinah Masjid in Chirimba, Blantyre.
During Ramadhan, some Muslims especially in the remote areas fail to get something for iftaar despite having some well to do Muslim families who could assist them with food to break their fast.
It is from this background that made the Turkish organization to come Malawi to distribute Ramadan hampers to the needy.
According to the Mustafa Efe, it is Cansuyu’s objective to share things with the needy especially this month of Ramadan.
“We have been conducting the same program in Malawi since 2004. Our aim is to share the little we have with the needy here as you know Islam encourages sharing,” said Mustafa who is a volunteer at Cansuyu.
About 1000 children benefited from the program.
Speaking to Malawi Muslims Official Website after the function, one of the beneficiaries Yusuf Jawadu said he was very thankful to Cansuyu for the iftaar.
In Malawi, many people live under poverty line with some of them depending on less than a dollar per day. Most of these underprivileged people are Muslims who constitute about 36% of the population.
“We chose Malawi because it is very poor. There are many rich people in the Muslim community but their wealth is not visible to the poor. This is why we thought of coming here and share the little we have with these poor Muslims,” said Mustafa.
So far, hampers worth over US$20,000 have been distributed in Salima and Balaka districts.
