Malawian rapper Canny One now known as Africa is set to perform at this year’s Lake of Stars festival. This year’s Lake of Stars festival is set to take place at Sunbird Nkopola, Mangochi from September 26 through 28th.
Africa made the announcement on his Instagram page a few weeks ago.
Some of the artists set to perform at the festival are Zone Fam from Zambia, Mafilika, Sally Nyundo, Piksy and Agoloso.
The rap artist, beat-maker and producer Africa aka Canny One, started his music journey sometime around 2004 highly influenced by Theo Thomson of Matalala Records.
Africa real name Denzel Chaguluka is a Malawian rapper who has caused a stir on the Malawian hip hop scene since 2012 and became well noticed last year [2013] when he release his hit single ‘Zokoma’ which became a hit in the Malawian streets.
Africa’s rap is inspired by the domestic surrounding but with an international earmark he calls the best of all worlds relating to almost everyone.
The 20 year old star said he was inspired to do music because his brother was so into music when he at a tender stage. He further said “being friends with a lot of big artists and producers including Theo Thomson and Taps Bandawe taught me a lot about music, I could say that in short.” said the Blantyre-based rapper.
He then went on to record a 5 singles between 2012 and 2013 titled ‘Kandimaliza, L.O.V.E, You can be her and Zokoma which is picking up buzz on national radios. Zokoma the hit single and other tracks like “Run the town, Papichulo (Dami Dulo Remix)’ are among the favourites for many who enjoy our own Malawian hip–hop.
He is currently working on his second mixtape called “Music Box” which has tracks like Legendary, Ou bebi bebi Ou, and the newly released Run the town. The mixtape also features urban artist like Classick, Hayze, Jillz, Gingy and BoyMagic now known as Kamuzu.
Run the town which features a mix of new hip hop drum arrangements and well executed verses makes this new single one of the best on the streets right now. The mixtape is being recorded and is to be released under Soulamp Entertainment, a record label which he owns.
Africa is not just a rapper; he is about to complete his second year at the Malawi Polytechnic going for Bachelor’s Degree in Information Technology and a DJ at The Basement Club in Blantyre.
