Malawi Congress Party (MCP) President Lazarus Chakwera has backed some analyst saying that Malawians have the right to debate on the proposal of a federal system of government.
“Let Malawians debate,” said Chakwera.
Chakwera’s reaction follows widespread rumors from some commentators who argue that a federalized system of the government in the country would mark the end of regionalism in the country.
Mutharika named a 20 member lean cabinet of which over 95 per cent of the members are from his Southern Region.
One has to understand the context in which such statements are made, and it is only when you understand the context in which they are said that you begin to appreciate.”
The MCP leader, who came second in May 20 tripartite polls, said proponents of discussions on issues of such nature, must not be labelled as divisive, regionalist or tribalistic.
“People within and outside parliament must debate and decide,” said Chakwera.
