There were running battles between the Police and Teachers who were planning to hold peaceful demonstration in Lilongwe over their unpaid allowances by Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) this morning.
The teachers rendered various services to MEC during the controversial May 20 tripartite election which saw President Professor Author Peter Mutharika of Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) outclassing the then ruling People’s Party (PP) President Dr Joyce Banda and the long serving Opposition Party MCP.
Heavily armed Police fired tear gas to disperse Teachers who gathered at Lilongwe Town Hall, claiming that the demonstration was unlawful as the police were not informed.
Speaking on behalf of teachers, National Coordinator for Teachers Union of Malawi Charles Kamcheka said he was shocked by the action taken by the Police due to the fact ” a letter to inform the police about the demonstrations was delivered to them yesterday”.
Speaking earlier, MEC spokesperson Sangwani Mwafulirwa said the delay in paying allowances for the teachers is due to the fact that teachers gave the body wrong bank accounts.
