As the cause of the last-Sunday-fire at the Mzuzu central market is yet to be established, it has transpired that property estimated at K300 million was destroyed in the inferno.
Mzuzu city Chief Executive Officer Thomas Chirwa said that the property that was destroyed belonged to 911 traders and that more may also claim loses in the accident.worthy
“Despite that we have done this plenary assessment, we feel these figure may increase because some traders are still doing own valuations,’’ said Chirwa.
Chirwa said the city council including the Mayoral office are doing everything possible to help victims of the fire.
Most of the traders were selling second hand clothes, electronic gadgets and restaurants.
Deputy Defense minister Jappie Mhango has ordered city authorities to institute investigations into what exactly causes fires at the city’s central market.
Said he, “something should happen at the central market in Mzuzu, city council and police should investigate fully the cause of these fire incidents.”
The Sunday incident is second of its kind after fire also destroyed property worth millions of kwacha in the same market in April this year
