Following the commotion that erupted on Monday where angry drivers sealed Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) offices in Lilongwe pressing the body to pay them their allowances.
MEC spokesperson Sangwani Mwafulirwa has said the body will this week meet Minister of Finance Goodall Gondwe to discuss the delay in paying the drivers allowances and other outstanding issues.
Mwafulirwa disclosed this in a statement issued to the Press posted on MEC Facebook page, saying the body is doing whatever it can to make sure that drivers from governments that worked during the polling day to have their allowances paid.
“Funding for paying the drivers was supposed to come from the elections budget through the Treasury. However, the Commission has been unable to pay the drivers due to some technicalities. To that effect the Commission has arranged a meeting this week with the Minister of Finance to discuss this and other outstanding issues”, reads part of the statement.
The Commission will communicate the outcome of the meeting with the Minister of Finance as regards when the polling staff would be paid their dues.
“This will also include outstanding June salaries for District Elections Coordinators, Constituency Returning Officers, Drivers, ICT Data Entry Clerks, Stringers, Constituency Civic and Voter Education Assistants and Warehouse Clerks”, continue to read the statement.
Meanwhile it is not yet known as to when the body will pay the allowances to the drivers.
