Barely two weeks to go for Malawi National Assembly to start its deliberations in Lilongwe where among other things, law makers will be expected to debate and pass the 2014/15 National Budget.
Malawi Congress Party (MCP) and former ruling People’s Party (PP) have said they expect the government to forward Marriage, Divorce and Family Relations Bill during the forthcoming Parliament meeting.
MCP spokesperson Jessie Kabwila and PP leader in Parliament Uladi Mussa were quoted in one of the daily papers in the country [ Daily Times] as saying: “It is important for Parliament to discuss the bill to deal with cases of early marriages that have become rampant in the country”.
When approached for comment, Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) Leader in Parliament Francis Kasaila could not be clear if the government will bring forward the bill or not.
“We have quite a number of bills that we wish to table within that period but I may not be able to list them now”, said Kasaila.
Meanwhile it is yet to be seen if the country will have specific ages when one can marry or get married.
