Consumer Association of Malawi (CAMA) Executive Director, John Kapito has said he is very disappointed with reports that certain Malawians use antiretroviral drugs wrongly.

Kapito was responding to a story carried by Weekend Nation titled ‘ARV’s on Sale’ dated August 16, 2014.

The story revealed that in certain district of the country such as Mulanje and Thyolo, ARV’s are sold to farmers who use the drugs to fatten pigs and others use the drug in distilling Mtonjani.

In his remarks, Kapito said the development is so worrisome.

“This is very worrisome and disappointing. Apart from threatening peoples’ lives, it shows there is breakdown of security of drugs in our hospitals,” said Kapito.

He, however, urged the government to empower communities to ensure that hospital staff do not abuse their positions to misuse government resources.
