Malawi Congress Party (MCP) has maintained its earlier stand that the party’s leader Dr Lazarus Chakwera emerged victorious in the May 20 controversial tripartite election.

MCP Central Region Chairperson Daniel Mlomo disclosed this on Saturday during the party’s thanksgiving rally held at Masintha Ground in Lilongwe.

“Without hiding anything, let me emphasise that the mighty MCP won the 20 May elections. Victory was stolen from us. But, let us not lose heart. Let us keep the faith,” Mlomo claimed.

He further thanked the gesture shown by the party President for calling for calm during the post-election grievances, saying this served the country from bloodshed.

“We have to thank our president Rt. Hon. Dr Lazarus Chakwera because there could have been chaos in the country had he not urged Malawians to remain peaceful after it was obvious that MCP was being robbed of victory”, said Mlomo.

On her part, MCP spokesperson Jessie Kabwila said that the Party will not stop disputing the May 20 election outcome.

The May 20 tripartite election which saw President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika emerging as a winner was marred by several irregularities.
