Five people are reported dead while ten others have sustained serious injuries after a Toyota Hiace minibus collided with a Toyota Hilux at 6 Miles in Lilongwe.

Lilongwe Police Publicist Kingsly Dandaula confirmed of the development and revealed that among the dead was Catholic nuns.

“The victims were rushed to Kamuzu Central Hospital where three, the nun among them, were pronounced dead upon arrival while 12 others sustained serious casualties,” said Dandaula.

He also disclosed that police had established that the minibus, SA 7720, was traveling from Lilongwe to Dedza when apparently the driver had lost control and drove it on the wrong side of the road where it slammed against the Toyota Hilux which was travelling towards Lilongwe.

Confirming the development, Communications Officer for the Episcopal Conference of Malawi (ECM) Prince Henderson said out of the dead, two are Catholic Nuns of the Sacramentine of Sisters Congregation from Ntcheu Parish.

Henderson has identified the deceased nuns as Sister Magreta Raveli aged 65 and Sister Anna Marie Kwidoti,68.They are all Italians.

Burial ceremony of the two nuns will take place on Saturday at Ntcheu Catholic Parish.
