President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika on Sunday during a mass rally held at Masintha ground in Lilongwe called treason case leveled against him during the Joyce Banda administrations as ‘stupid’.

Mutharika also claimed that an assassination attempt was made on his life while in police custody.

Mutharika who looked so angry, further quashed claims by former Malawi Defence Force (MDF)commander General Henry Odillo that he had requested him to take over government following the death of his departed brother and former president Bingu wa Mutharika.

Mutharika was arrested and charged with treason in 2012 during the death of his late brother.

According to commission of inquiry instituted by former President Dr. Joyce Banda, revealed that Mutharika and six Party bigwigs plotted to bar Banda from assuming the high office.

“In fact, the findings of the so-called commission of inquiry were just a concoction of things that were never there. They were total rubbish.

“[Even] the treason case itself was stupid. The six of us never asked [former Army General, Henry] Odillo to take over government. We were just examining the situation. I am a lawyer and I knew what I was doing”, said Mutharika.

He said he was ready to dispute Odillo’s version of events in court, saying he was only speaking about the events today as he was previously under a gag order from the courts stopping the treason suspects from commenting on the case.
.
He further alleged that while in police custody at Lumbadzi Police Station, the party’s youth supporters foiled an assassination attempt after a doctor sent by the State House was apprehended by party supporters.

This was the third rally for President Mutharika since he assumed the high office on May 20, 2014.
