Malawi Law Society (MLS) has added its voice on the speech by President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika during a rally at Masintha ground in Lilongwe, describing it as nepotistic.

During the rally, Mutharika openly attacked Chairperson of the Commission of Inquiry Justice Elton Singini into the death and circumstances of the former President Bingu wa Mutharika and former Attorney General and the former Director of Public Prosecutions that they are from the same village.

President blasted the treason charges leveled against him, saying it was a concoction and a total “rubbish’.

In a press statement dated September 7, jointly signed by MLS President Mandala Mambulasa and General Secretary Felisa Kilembe , MLS said the President’s statement promotes nepotism and is unacceptable in a democratic society.

“We find the statements to be nepotistic and unacceptable in an open and democratic society where every citizen has the right to economic activity and work anywhere in Malawi regardless of their ethnic or tribal background.

“It is also important to appreciate that the persons mentioned were professional public officers duly appointed in their various positions by the then Head of State,” reads the statement in part.

Mutharika’s government has received criticisms from various stakeholders ,describing it as favoring people from the South especially people from Thyolo.

No wonder certain quote’s from the North lead by former ruling People’s Party (PP) Provincial Chair Christopher Mzomera Ngwira has been preaching for the formation of a federal system of government to ensure equal access to development.
