A Chief Installation celebration eventually ended as a funeral ceremony on Saturday evening of 13th September in Dowa when a Chewa traditional dancer “Gulewamkulu” was run-over by a high speed minibus.

The deceased has been identified as Malijoni Dave aged 18 from Zangala village T/A Chiwele in Dowa district.

The incident took place along Lilongwe-Salima road at Zangala village during installation ceremony for a Village Head Man.

FOM speaking to Dowa Police Public Relations Officer Sergeant Richard Kaponda said the young man who was in a Gulewamkulu costume and was dancing at the ceremony attempted to cross the Lilongwe-Salima road to get a K20 note dropped by a man traveling from Salima to Lilongwe.

At this point the Gulewamkulu did not look at all directions to see if a vehicle was coming from either direction. Unfortunately a Minibus Toyota registration number MN 1839 coming from Lilongwe direction hit him and died on the spot

Postmortem conducted at Mvela Health Centre by Doctors from Dowa District Hospital revealed that Gulewamkulu died due to head injuries said Sergeant Richard Kaponda

The police officer mentioned that police have invited the minibus driver to make his statement. He however said the driver may not be charged with reckless driving considering how the accident happened.
