Malawi Vice President Saulos Chilima has agreed to be soaked in water for charity in a challenge that’s known as the ice bucket challenge.

Having begun in America, the Ice Bucket Challenge has since become an internet sensation with celebrities from across the world soaking themselves with ice cold buckets of water to raise money for the Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) Association.

The social media craze is aimed at awareness and raising money for charity.

Chilima was nominated to take part in the Ice Bucket Challenge by Nedbank boss Paul Guta who was also soaked in cold water.

Confirming the Vice Presidents acceptance, his press officer Pilirani Phiri said Chilima will do it because it is for a good cause.

Phiri further explained that the VP agreed to the challenge as it is aimed at raising funds for charity.

“In fact of late philanthropists like Bill Gates have done it to promote charity. So the VP will do it and the money raised will be sent to an orphanage we will identify,” said Phiri in a statement.

Though the VP is to be soaked the press officer did not mention as to when and where.

Guta, who also nominated Welford Sabola of Wamkulu Palace and Iqbar Muhammad of Ninkawa Transport among others, said he was humbled that the Vice President accepted his nomination.

It shows the Vice President understands the importance of this initiative of allowing to be poured ice water to help raise funds for the underprivileged, said Guta.

Of late high profile people including billionaire Bill Gates and Chelsea coach Jose Mourinho have undergone the challenge in support of charity.

Everyone is queuing up to douse themselves in freezing liquid in front of the cameras.
