Malawi Red Cross society (MRCS) on Friday donated assorted drugs to Phalombe District Health Office (DHO) worthy K4 million.
Speaking during the ceremony at Phalombe Health Center, MRCS Assistant Program Manager Obed Mwambakulu said the consignment was part of a three year water sanitation project the organization is implementing in the district.
“Considering that Phalombe is one of the districts that has a high prevalence of diarrhea cases, we introduced a hygiene and sanitary program that is assisting people in two Traditional Authorities of Mkumba and Kaduya have access to clean and safe drinking water by among other things, the project is providing tap water and constructing pit latrines.
“This donation of drugs which manly targets the under five’s is another component that we feel will help reduce diarrhea cases in the district,” said Mwambakulu.
On his part, , Phalombe DHO, Tisungane Mwenyenkulu hailed the gesture shown by MRCS, saying the drugs will go a long way in assisting people of Phalombe.
He said ‘drug shortage’ was now an adage synonymous with the country’s hospitals and the gesture could thus not be taken lightly.
Among the donated drugs were Clotimazole, Metronidazole and oral rehydration salts.
