President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika has said his government will let the citizens decide whether the country should adopt the Federal System of government or not.
Mutharika said this at Sanjika Palace on Monday during a Press Conference aiming at updating Malawians on what transpired at the 69th Secession of the United Nation General Assembly (UNGA) held in New York, United States of America.
“I think Malawians have a right to decide on that. But those who are pushing for this issue should do so carefully and with honest”, Said Mutharika.
Mutharika however warned his government will not allow the nation to be misled on the issue, arguing he will defend the Constitution by any means necessary.
Mutharika’s reaction comes barely days after Livingstonia Synod of the (CCAP) in the Northern openly warned the government not to threaten those people who are advocating for federal government.
Synod Moderator Douglas Chirambo said this during the installation ceremony of M’Mberwa five at Edingeni in Mzimba.
“People should not be threatened for voicing their concerns. If proponents of federalism are pushing for federal government, it means something is wrong”, said Chirambo.
He cited the recent quota system of selecting to students to conventional secondary schools and public universities as a justification for federalism calls.
Meanwhile it is yet to be seen how this is going to end.
