It is now official that Malawi ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) now has 51 Members of Parliament (MPs) after winning all parliamentary seats in Tuesday by-elections.

The Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) on Wednesday confirmed ruling Democratic DPP as winner of the parliamentary by-elections held Blantyre North and Thyolo East Constituencies.

Malawi has 193 constituencies and DPP has the highest number of legislators elected on party ticket excluding independents who joined the government benches.

DPP’s Francis Phiso won the Blantyre North parliamentary seat with 10,382, beating People’s Party Secretary General Paul Maulidi who got 2,071 votes and United Democratic Front’s (UDF) Caleb Ng’ombo who got 900 votes.

In Thyolo East Constituency, Gerson Solomon of DPP got 5,493 votes, independent January Bwanali 1,756 votes while another independent Elisha Milanzi got 703 votes.

In the local government polls, DPP won in two wards, independents two and one Ward has gone to opposition Malawi Congress Party (MCP).
