In recognition to the challenges that Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital (QECH) faces, Evangelical Church of Malawi (ECOM) youths under the banner of Ecom Youth in Action (EYA)-Blantyre Region on Saturday visited the hospital to conduct a general cleaning.

Over 200 youths who were accompanied by Pastors and Church elders took time to mop in the wards and corridors, cleaning the windows and sweeping around the hospital.

Speaking after the event, EYA Chairman Precious Mulera said the grouping decided to do the exercise at the hospital in fulfillment of one of their crusades mission which is ‘spreading the gospel of the Lord through Bible and charity works’.

“We thought it wise to come here and carry out these activities as one way of exercising our youth’s role to play in any activities happening in our own country.

The hospital is facing a number of challenges like drug shortage, lack of enough wards to accommodate the growing number of patients there by leading to lack of hygiene and this cannot be dealt only with hospital staffs only”, Mulera said.

Concurring with Mulera’s remarks Chifundo Banda Hetekere, one of the Youths that conducted the exercise said the grouping came up with the idea after noting that the hospital has less staff to clean all areas as required.

She urged other stakeholders and well-wishers to come at the hospital and do something to ensure that hygiene is maintained.

On her part, QECH Principal Nursing Officer Feggie Bodole thanked the Youths for their kind gesture.
“The hospital faces a number of challenges due to high number of patients that the hospital receives. The development makes the hospital premises look filthy always as workers fail to execute their duties as required.

“The coming of ECOM Youths to do the general cleaning at the hospital has acted as a relief to us and they should continue with this gesture and am urging other Youths and some well wishers in the country to emulate the gesture shown by EYA”, said Bodole.

EYA organized a three day annual crusade in Blantyre at Chitawira ECOM praying centre from 10th-12th October 2014.

The crusade was held under the theme ‘Rise and shine for your time has come’ (Isaiah 60 v 1).
