Malawi Congress Party (MCP) President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera has urged his party followers across the country to bury what transpired on the May 20 and focus on rebuilding the party.
Chakwera has on several times trashes the Democratic Progressive Party era under President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika as the government that has ascended to power through back door and he has denied to accept the May 20 election results.
MCP President said this on Sunday in Dowa during his first political rally since the elections.
In his speech, Chakwera said many people were disappointed with the outcome of the election but “if we continue concentrating on that, we will not see the way.”
“I was one of the angriest people, but I did not want things to get out of hand. Peace is very important for our progress. Now, I want to tell the nation that your votes might have been swallowed in whatever tricks were there, but thanks for voting for me,” said Chakwera.
MCP President said his u-turn on the election results should not be taken as a sign of weakness, but a thought for Malawi’s peace.
May 20 tripartite elections which was the first of its kind in Malawi history was marred by several irregularities. The irregularities forced some opposition Political Parties like MCP, People’s Party (PP) to seek for court intervention.
