President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika has been installed as new Chancellor for the University of Malawi (Unima) at a ceremonial which took place at Chancellor College in Zomba.

After the installation ceremony, Mutharika presided over the 60th congregation of the University where he awarded postgraduate diplomas and degrees to 397 graduates.

In his speech, Mutharika urged the University to double its efforts in mobilising resources.

“We must develop a resource mobilization and sustainability plan which is supported by efficient and effective systems for reducing wastage and making all accountable.

“I wish all graduates every success in their future lives,” said the new chancellor.

The University of Malawi is an educational institution established in 1964.

The University of Malawi was founded a few months after Malawi got its Independence. The first enrolment consisted of 90 students in Blantyre.

Teaching began in 1965 in Blantyre and within two years the Institute of Public Administration at Mpemba, the Soche Hill College of Education and the Polytechnic in Blantyre, and Bunda College in Lilongwe became colleges of the university.

In 1973, all the constituents of the university apart from the polytechnic and Bunda College moved to Zomba and were merged into Chancellor College.

In 1979, Kamuzu College of Nursing became a college of the university, and in 1991 the College of Medicine in Blantyre was formed as a further constituent college.
