Karonga Police are keeping in custody 12 people for setting fire to 28 houses and injurinig four people in Mwankenja Village in the district.

FaceofMalawi speaking to Karonga Police Public Relations Officer Enock Livason confirmed of the development saying; ‘We have really arrested 12 people from 3 villages, Mwenitete 1 and 2 and from Mwawembe for being suspected that they set ablaze 28 houses belonging to people of Mwankenja village.

According to Livason the suspects are reported on 17 November, 2014 to have gone to Mwankenja village claiming that the land belongs to them and as the quarrel grew they started setting fire to the houses.

The suspects are suspected to have also stolen chicken, pigs and goats in the area.

‘So far four people have been injured; two of which have been admitted to Mpata Health Centre where they are getting treatment while the other two were treated as outside patients,” said the officer.

“The people who were injured are Thomas Mwangonde age 33, Edward Kalambo aged 85 and Magadalena Towera aged over 70 ,’ Said Livason.

The suspects have since been remanded at Karonga Prison and are expected to appear before court once the court strike in over to answer charges of Arson, Malicious damage and theft.
