Malawi Revenue Authority (MRA) has arrested Oswald Lutepo, the prime suspect in the plundering of public funds at Capitol Hill dubbed Cashgate on the charges bordering on tax evasion.

Lutepo was arrested on Monday night.

Lawyer for Lutepo, Oswald Mtupila confirmed of the arrest in an interview with FaceofMalawi, saying his client handed himself to the Police.

Meanwhile reports reaching FOM indicates that Lutepo was rushed to Kamuzu Central Hospital (KCH) just after the arrest.

Inside sources who confided to FOM said that in the same night Lutepo was visited by Presidential Adviser on National Unity and Parliamentary Affairs, Simon Vuwa Kaunda and Minister of Labour, Henry Mussa.

The development raised suspicion among people who were around as speculations are high that the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) is conniving with Lutepo to implicate former President Dr Joyce Banda in the scandal.

Lutepo is suspected of evading tax of about K1.8 billion (about $3.6m) from 2011 to 2014.
