Divisions have emerged in the Opposition People’s Party (PP) over the appointment of former Malawi Vice President Khumbo Hastings Kachale as the Party’s President replacing Party founder Dr. Joyce Banda.
Kachale was clowned President on Monday by PP Northern block at a caucus held at Mzuzu Victory Temple in Mzuzu and PP Provincial Governor for the north Rev Christopher Mzomera Ngwira confirmed of the development to the press.
Reacting to the development, PP’s Secretary General Ibrahim Matola trashed the move, saying it’s a nonstarter.
Matola said as far as PP is concerned Dr. Banda remains president of the former ruling party, dismissing claims by Rev Ngwira that the decision to replace her was made in consultation with all party officials.
Speaking to the press after the news came to light; Kachali said he will only lead the party as an active member of the party not president.
Meanwhile Ngwira maintains that Kachali is the interim leader of the Party.
