Two Children of the same family are reported dead in the Northern district of Rumphi after drowning in Lunyina River on Wednesday.
Rumphi Police Spokesperson, Victor Khamisi has confirmed of the development in an interview with the press and identified the deceased Children as Patricia Nkhoma , 8 and Monica Nkhoma 10.
On the fateful day the two left their home around eleven in the morning accompanied by playmates to the river without the knowledge of their parents.
“Whilst at the river the two children decided to take a bath and unfortunately they strayed to the deeper side of the river where they drowned, “Khamisi said.
When the other children noted that their friends were not coming out after lengthy period of time, they rushed to inform the elders including the father of the children about of the incident as their mother had gone to the market.
“One of the eye witnesses at the scene of the incident, Tamara Mkandawire, went to inform the father of the two children about the incident.
“When the father arrived at the scene the children had already been retrieved from the water but they were feared dead. They were later pronounced dead at the District Hospital.
“Post-mortem carried out on the two bodies by medical personnel revealed that they had died of suffocation,” Khamisi added,”Khamisi added.
The deceased Children hail from Chatumbwa Village in the area of Paramount Chief Chikulamayembe in the district.
