Three people are in Police custody in the commercial capital Blantyre for allegedly posing as Police officers and causing havoc within town.
Blantyre Police Assistant Publicist Andrew Mayawo confirmed of the arrest and identified the suspects as Charles Labana, Gerald James and Moses Kachingwe.
According to Mayawo, the Police managed to arrest the three upon receiving a tip from well-wishers that the suspects were using Police uniforms to break into people’s houses.
“They were terrorizing and targeting unsuspecting people at the Park. With the Malawi Police camouflage uniform and handcuffs, the suspects were impersonating police officers until some victims came to report to us about these people whose criminal acts reflected badly on us,” Mayawo told the press.
He further said apart from cash, the suspects were also targeting items like cell phones and laptops.
The three will appear in court soon to answer two charges of impersonating police officers contrary to Section 389; and robbery and violence contrary to Section 301 of the Penal Code.
Labana hails from Nyaulombo village, Traditional Authority (T/A) Makhuwira in Chikwawa district; James comes from Khatata village, T/A Kuntaja in Blantyre district while Kachingwe comes from Nkusa village, T/A Changata in Thyolo district.
