“There is a troubling trend that researchers have identified again and again – low-income parents, especially single mothers, have higher rates of depression and depressive symptoms than their higher-income counterparts.

Data from the Fragile Families and Child Well Being Study shows that mothers with persistent depression invest less time with their children on positive activities such as reading, outings, trips to the park, and indoor play.

This evidence suggests that children of depressed parents are often denied adult attention and interactions that are crucial for safe and healthy development. Multiple studies have shown that children with depressed mothers are more likely to have behavior problems, poor academic performance, and delays in cognitive and social development.

This has been proven again and again, as children and adults take their own life because of poverty. Having no hope, they take their own lives instead of living a poor life. While parents come home tired from a day’s work and almost bring nothing home for food, children are equally depressed by their parents’ behaviour.

this 17-year-old takes his own life because they were poor

This 17-year-old boy from Anhui, China decided to take his own life, hoping to be reincarnated a rich person. He left a letter for his family before leaving home sating: “My death is only because of myself. After I die keep my kidneys intact, selling it off should be worth some money.”

The parents can’t help but to blame themselves for ‘not being good parents’ and not being able to provide for their son’s needs.

Being poor should never be the reason for taking your own life. If your parents are struggling to survive, you should too.
