An 18-year-old woman is in Police custody in Dedza for allegedly dumping her newly born baby in a bush.
Police in Dedza have confirmed of the development in an interview with the Press and identified the suspect as Tiwonge Gowelo of Fwalikire village, Traditional Authority Kachindamoto in the district.
According to Detective Inspector Pindani, the incident happened on September 20.
He said the suspect gave birth to a baby girl in the bush without the help of medical personnel on Saturday.
“Having done this, she dumped her in the ditch right there and went home,” he said.
According to Pindani, the baby was discovered the following morning by girls who went into the bush to collect firewood reported the matter to Police.
“The Police went there and collected the baby to Mtakataka Healthy Centre.
“Medical personnel confirmed that Tiwonge really gave birth to the child 72 hrs before the crime was committed,” he said.
Meanwhile, the Child is well and still at Mtakataka Healthy Centre.
