UNILADs At Least 13 Dead And 20 Injured In US College Massacre imageNational Post/Twitter

A community college in the US state of Oregon has become the latest site to fall victim to a mass shooting.

The massacre was allegedly contained to one classroom but has left a death toll currently estimated at 13 people, with 20 others reported injured.

The lone gunman is believed to have made victims stand up and state their religion before shooting them.

The solo shooter has been pronounced dead at the scene following an exchange of fire with police. He was confirmed to be a 20-year-old male.

Police were first called to the scene at around 10:40AM local time with the campus then being evacuated, and students being escorted to the Douglas County fairgrounds. As yet no members of the police force that attended the scene have been reported as injured. Douglas County Sheriff John Hanlin has also confirmed in an interview that the scene remains ‘active’.

Ellen F. Rosenblum, the Oregon attorney general, told MSNBC:

“We are just heartbroken here in Oregon that an act of this magnitude has occurred in our state.” She added that the figures were from the Oregon Department of Justice’s Criminal Justice division.

Umpqua Community College has approximately 2,000 students and 200 members of staff who work on the campus, located in the town of Roseburg.

The campus has a reputation as being quiet, and according to Federal data the only crimes reported in recent years have been sporadic burglaries and one case of aggravated assault in 2013.

Our thoughts are with all the families and friends of those affected.
