A 42-year-old man has committed suicide by hanging himself in Chileka, Blantyre after testing HIV positive.

Deputy National Police spokesperson Nicholas Gondwa confirmed of the development in an interview with the Press, saying the incident happened on September 30, 2015.

According to Gondwa, the deceased identified as Isaac Masangano hanged himself in his own bedroom after discovering that he is HIV positive.

Gondwa expressed shock over increasing cases of suicide in the country, saying four suicide cases were reported on the said date.

“The Malawi Police Service is worried with the increase of suicide cases in the country. Just within a day [September 30], four people have died through suicide by hanging themselves for reasons that could have been solved had it been they involved elders to discuss the issues,” Gondwa was quoted as saying.

Masangano hails from Kampaka Village, Traditional Authority (T/A) Kapeni in Blantyre.
