Preliminary reports in the fire incident that gutted down Vigwagwa Market in Mzimba on Thursday night indicate that property worth MK250 million has been destroyed by the inferno.
The fire is said to have started at around 9pm from a shop made of timber close to the pumping filling station.
Confirming the development in an interview with the Press, Mzimba Market Chairperson Emmanuel Ng’ambi said close to 200 vendors have been affected.
Ng’ambi said the fire has left many vendors plying their trade at the Market hopeless as they have nowhere to start from.
He also blamed Mzimba District Council for untimely response to the fire incident.
On his part, Mzimba District Council Chairperson Thomas Chirwa attributed the challenge to lack of vehicles by the Council to be used in extinguishing the fire.
Chirwa said currently the Council and the Police are investigating the cause of the fire.
Meanwhile Malawians have expressed concern over the recent fire incident that have rocked the country.
