Police in Ntcheu is keeping in custody Luka Kamfozi 39, for being suspected of murdering his biological mother and burying the dead corpse in the edges of Mphate Stream at night.
This incident happens barely one month after police in the same district had netted a husband for murdering wife on jealousy grounds.
Confirming on the arrest, Ntcheu Police Public Relations Officer Sub Inspector Gift Matewere described the matter as unfortunate especially when committed by people who were supposed to provide someone’s protection.
“We arrested the suspect on Tuesday October, 13th following a tip from the general public that he buried the body of his mother at night which is not our culture,” said Matewere.
Police say the deceased Agnes Enock who hailed from Mwambo Village, Traditional Authority Mlumbe in Zomba was brought to Mphate in Ntcheu by the suspect for a continued medication after a long ailment.
He further told Mana that people raised eye brows after realising that the deceased was missing and when the neighbors quizzed him on the whereabouts of his mother the suspected said, ‘she had gone to her home village’.
But according to Matewere the arrest had opened a can of worms and that police was convinced that there was foul play in connection to her demise.
He says, “After interrogation it was revealed that he buried the dead body with a colleague a thing we cannot tell more details now to avoid putting our investigations into jeopardy”.
However, according to another source which tipped Mana on this issue said the suspect murdered the mother because she was not responding positively to medication and was therefore afraid of funeral costs if she had died.
“He committed the crime while his wife had gone to see her parents at her home village and told her that he had decided to send her sick mother in- law back in Zomba,” said the source as he sought for anonymity.
The source added that, “Suspicion grew higher because neighbors had seen the sick mother in the evening prior to her questionable missing the following morning.”
“The body was exhumed on Wednesday, October 14th after police got court permission. But the corps was in bad state because the concealed burial happened in July 2015,” said Matewere.
Police has since issued a stern warning to the general public that the long hand of the law will not be escaped and that all offenders connected to this incident will be arrested and brought to the book soon. mana
