Information sourced by FaceofMalawi indicates that Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) leaders who are in the forefront advocating for the immediate resignation of President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika are receiving death threats from anonymous callers.
The development comes barely a week after the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) released reported accusing CSOs of conniving with the Opposition Malawi Congress Party (MCP) to oust the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) regime.
Timothy Mtambo of Centre for Human Rights and Rehabilitation (CHRR) and Gift Trapence of Centre for the Development of People (Cedep) have confirmed of the development in an interview with the Press.
Mtambo said the issue has since been referred to the United Nations (UN), claiming that the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) is now unleashing terror similar to what they face during late Bingu wa Mutharika’s regime.
Mtambo said among those that are threatening him is a DPP sympathizer Nelson Chijere Mwase who has denied the claims.
Reacting to the development, DPP spokesperson Francis Kasaila said this is not the first time that the CSOs have made such claims and this is no news to them.
“They always report the DPP to the UN because they don’t like the DPP. And we will not stop them, they can go ahead,” challenged Kasaila.
Meanwhile CSOs have not dropped their call for the immediate resignation of Mutharika over his failure to run the affairs of the country.
