Five people are in Police custody in Zomba for allegedly being found in possession of 45 bags of Indian hemp (Chamba) Wednesday morning near Domasi Roadblock in Zomba.

Zomba police spokesperson, Sergeant Patricia Supiliano confirmed of the development in an interview with the Press.

According to Supiliano, the Police managed to apprehend the suspects at Nyamuka Village after the car they were using diverted suddenly when it approached Domasi Roadblock.

The suspects are Gift Makandika, 35, of Mdala Village, Moffat Makunganya of Milimo Village, Tanaya Ndondwa, 34, of Mbulukuta Village and Daniel Chigawa 35, of Sanjika Village all from T/A Mlumbe in Zomba while the driver is Daudi Mphanga 35, from Mponda Village T/A Nsamala in Balaka district.

“We can confirm that we are keeping four people in custody for being found in possession of Indian Hemp, this happened in the morning of Wednesday in Nyamuka Village in Domasi. The vehicle, a three tonner Toyota Hiace, registration number BLK 3482 diverted just before reaching the roadblock and police officers followed it and found it at Nyamuka Village, ” said Supiliano.

She said the suspects told the police that they were on their way to Ndirande in Blantyre where they do there illegal business.

Supiliano said the suspects will appear in court soon to answer charges of being found in possession of illicit drug which is contrary to section 4 and 19 of the Dangerous Drugs Act.
