Two people are in Police custody in Lilongwe for allegedly being found in possession of a MK4 rifle and eight live bullets without proper documents.

The Police have confirmed of the development in a statement made available to FaceofMalawi and identified the suspects as Robert Malisewo, 48 and Alfan Bisayi, 29.

According to the statement, the Police recovered the rifle and arrested the two on November 11 as they were following up a different case.

“The two were arrested after a special team of police investigators who were following up a different case discovered that the suspects were possessing the militant rifle illegally. The team from Kawale Police Sub Station who were investigating another case of possessing foreign currency without proper documents paid a surprise visit to the house of one of the suspects Robert Patrick Malisawo.

“A standard search by the law enforcers revealed a discovery of eight live ammunition and the said rifle in an altered state. It is believed that the suspects altered the militant rifle by using a MK4 rifle engine and modified it into a man made greener with a malice criminal intention,” reads the statement in part.

Adds the statement: “Preliminarily, the police have instituted profound investigations to track down the perpetrators behind this development as one co-suspect Alfani Bisayi has already been arrested.”

The statement further said that the arrest of the two will reduce the record of violent criminal cases as traces of the said recovered rifle has left marks in various scenes of crime.

The two will appear in court soon to answer charges of being found in possession of a firearm without licence.

Malisawo hails from Ngwere village in the area of T/A Kasumbu in Dedza while Bisayi hails from Masasa village T/A Gomani in Ntcheu.
