A 53-year-old man has committed suicide in Area 47 in the capital Lilongwe by hanging himself to the roof of his own guest house.

Lilongwe Police Station Assistant Public Relations Officer Constable Maggie Selemani confirmed of the development in an interview with the press.

According to Selemani, the deceased had committed suicide when his 53 years-old wife, Jesse Ngwira a nurse at SOS had gone to write her examinations at African University.

“The incidence happened in the morning when his wife had gone for examinations at African University. At around 11:00 hours the husband allegedly sent the houseboy to the market to buy some relish for lunch.

“When the houseboy came back with the relish he did not find the deceased and continued to prepare the food. After preparing the food he started looking for the deceased only to find him hanging from a roof in the guest house,” said Selemani.

Postmortem conducted revealed that death was due to suffocation and the Police do not suspect any foul play.

The Police have identified the deceased as Bernad Ngwira of Ngonga village in the area of Traditional Authority Chikulamayembe in Rumphi district.

Police are advising the general public that if there are issues in the family, it is best to seek advice from marriage counsellors or from the church adding that suicide is not the answer.

Ngwira who was before his death not employed, once worked for Tobacco Association of Malawi (TAMA).
