A 53-year-old man died on Sunday after drowning in Chipasula stream in Lilongwe.

Lilongwe Police Station Spokesperson, Inspector Kingsley Dandaula told Malawi News Agency (Mana) that the deceased was mentally challenged and was living with his 85-year-old father the area.

“The deceased was a mentally challenged person and on 6th December, he left the house without telling anyone where he was going and never returned. On the next day at around 5:00 in the morning, the deceased person was seen floating dead in Chipasula stream

“Upon seeing the deceased floating, members of the community reported the matter to Kawale Police who took the body to Kamuzu Central Hospital (KCH) mortuary for postmortem,” said Dandaula.

He said results of the postmortem revealed that death was due to suffocation and no foul play was suspected in the incident.

Police identified the deceased as Anakeles Maliseni from Chimutu 2 village in the area of Traditional Authority Tsabango in the district.

Meanwhile, police have advised parents and guardians to ensure that children do not go bathing or go playing in the rivers during the rainy season. mana
