As debate continues over the recent federalism findings by Public Affairs Committee (PAC) which says 64 percent of Malawians are against federal system of government advocated by some people in the country, Livingstonia Synod of CCAP has added its voice by quashing the report.
The development comes barely days after Forum for Advancement of Federal System and Rural Development in Malawi (FAFSRDM) Chairperson Dr. Bina Shawa also quashed the report.
PAC and CCJP report says 64 percent of Malawians across the country have rejected the federal system of government.
According to PAC Chairperson Father Peter Mulomole, his organizations conducted a poll recently across the country following meetings PAC held in view of sentiments expressed by some Malawians including some political leaders who said the way forward for Malawi was federal system of government after the 2014 general election.
Mulomole said the survey shows only 36 percent of Malawians want the federal system of government.
Speaking in an interview with the press, Synod’s Moderator Reverend Douglas Chipofya said the church was not consulted on the research and asked PAC to explain how they came up with the findings.
Chipofya said the percentage as published by PAC is a mere opinion poll, which does not represent an actual wish of the people ‘on the ground’.
Advocacy for federalism in the country was started by the fired opposition People’s Party (PP) provincial chair for the north Christopher Mzomera Ngwira.
Ngwira accused the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) regime under President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika of sidelining other regions when it comes to development and appointments of people in public positions.
