Namwera Police unit in the eastern district of Mangochi has been closed indefinitely following at attack by angry villagers who were demanding an immediate release of a detainee.

Mangochi Police spokesperson Roderick Maida confirmed of the development in an interview with the press.

According to Maida, on Thursday one of the shops at the trading centre was broken into and the owner suspected a serial thief who had just been released from prison in November.

He said on Friday members of community invaded the house of the suspect and apprehended him together with his friends and handed them to the Police.

“Late in the in the evening at around 6pm, the irate villagers went back to Namwera Police Unit demanding the immediate release to administer mob Justice in him,” he said.

Maida said things went out of hand when the villagers were told that the suspects have been transferred to Mangochi Police for safety.

“The angry villagers descended on the police unit destroying window panes, door frames and even others reached at the extent of removing iron sheets from the building,” he said.

Meanwhile no one has been arrested in connection to the incident.
