NEW mum Guddo Devi was left shocked when she gave birth to conjoined twins in India on Saturday.
The 25-year-old expectant mother could not afford the normal pre-birth ultrasounds, and only discovered she was giving birth to conjoined twins when they were removed by caesarean section.
The twins are joined together at the stomach, meaning they share most of their vital organs and their two legs.
They were delivered after an uncomplicated pregnancy by caesarean section at a hospital in Uttar Pradesh, India.
Their father Dalvir Singh, 27, said they couldn’t afford the normal ultrasounds on his daily labour job’s wages but thought they weren’t necessary as the pregnancy was “very smooth”.
“She never complained of any problem throughout her pregnancy,” he said.
Mr Singh added that his “family is heartbroken” and he plans to take them to a bigger hospital to consult specialists about separation.
However, their doctors believe the babies could have a short life-span.
Gynaecologist Dr Ruchi Gupta, who delivered the babies, said they only discovered the mother was carrying conjoined twins at the last moment.
“The babies are perfectly healthy and so we did not keep them in the intensive care unit and rather handed them to their mother,” Dr Gupta said.
“But we cannot tell how long they will survive as conjoined twins have a short lifespan.” Daily Telegraph
