Information sourced by FaceofMalawi indicates that Unilever Malawi on December 17, 2015 donated expired margarine to prisoners at Zomba maximum prison as Christmas gifts.

It is said that inmates discovered the margarine is expired after eating it, raising fears of their health.

Unilever country manager Chikondi Ng’ombe confirmed of the development in an interview with the press on Monday, saying the margarine was not meant for consumption.

Ching’ombe said the company had agreed with prison officials that the margarine be used for soap making.

On his part, Prison spokesman Smart Maliro asked for more time on the matter.

Each inmate received four margarines weighing 200milligrams.
