As the shooting case of former Budget Director Paul Mphwiyo is proceeding at the High Court in the capital Lilongwe this afternoon, former People’s Party (PP) spokesperson Hophmally Makande has appeared in court as witness.
Makande was named as witness along with former Finance minister Friday Jumbe and others by the third accused in the case Macdonald Kumwembe.
During cross examination, Makande denied to say anything concerning his role in the plunder of public funds dubbed cashgate as quizzed by Kumwembe.
“I did not give Mphwiyo ten days to make payments. I don’t know anything and therefore can not say anything.
“Pika Manondo &Mphwiyo were good friends, his brother lived with Mphwiyo some yrs back, they were always together”
Adds Makande: “Mphwiyo and Kasambara were also good friends.”
Earlier in the day, Jumbe was also paraded in the court as witness and he said he is testifying in the case as financial expert not as state witness or Kumwembe’s witness.
The former Minister also denied explaining the role of Mphwiyo when asked by Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) Mary Kachale.
“I don’t know the parameters from which Mphwiyo was working under,” he said.
Meanwhile Makande is still being cross examined at the High court in the capital Lilongwe.
