A 6 year–old girl on Sunday drowned in a septic tank at Area 47 sector 2 in Lilongwe.

Lilongwe Police Station Spokesperson Inspector Kingsley Dandaula said the girl was missing in the house which prompted the parents to start looking for her.

“At around 9 o’clock in the morning the girl was missing and whilst looking for her, the parents noticed a broken ceiling board which was used as a cover for the septic tank only to find the girl already dead,” said Dandaula.

He said the matter was reported to Lingadzi Police who took the body to the Kamuzu Central Hospital (KCH) for postmortem which revealed that death was due to suffocation and no foul play was suspected.

The deceased girl hails from Kachule village in the area of Traditional Authority Kachere in Dedza district.

The Police are therefore advising parents and guardians to ensure that such unsafe surroundings are protected accordingly to avoid such incidences.mana
