As the day draws near for opposition People’s Party (PP) Spokesperson Ken Msonda to appear in court for his gay killing remarks in the country, a gay group calling itself Rainbow Generation (Blantyre Chapter) has been formed to mobilise support for the gay cause.
According to a statement seen by FaceofMalawi, the group is calling upon all gays and lesbians in the country to come to the Blantyre Magistrate Court on Friday, January 22, 2016 and provide moral support and encouragement to those fighting the battle for gays in the country.
The group expressed shock over the remarks said by various sector against gays in the country, saying the remarks are not only indication of backward thinking but clearly inhumane and barbaric.
“As the Rainbow Generation, we are shocked that the country seems to be drifting towards creating ‘courts’ outside the courts when in the spirit of justice and human rights, the courts are the rightful places to obtain justice,” reads in part the statement.
Centre for the Development of the People (Cedep) led by Gift Trapence and Centre for Human Rights and Rehabilitation (CHRR) sued Msonda two weeks ago.
The Two NGOs accused Msonda of citing violence against homosexuals contrary to section 124 of the country’s Penal Code.
The Section states that “any person who, whether in writing or by words or by his behaviour or otherwise— (a) solicits or incites any other person to fail to comply with or to contravene any law in force in Malawi or in any part thereof; or (b) indicates or implies to any person that it would be incumbent or desirable to fail to comply with or to contravene any such law, shall be liable to imprisonment for five years”
Meanwhile Msonda has on severally times quoted saying that he is more than ready to face Mtambo and Trapence in court.
