Police in Mangochi have arrested a 35 year old Mozambican national for the offence of illegal possession of subsidized fertilizer and illegal entry into the country.

The police identified the suspect as Issa Wilson who entered the country on Friday and was staying at Bwanali Rest house at Chiponde Trading Centre in the district.

According to Mangochi Police Public Relations Officer, Inspector Rodrick Maida on January 23 this year the suspect bought 20 bags of the farm input subsidized fertilizer at K18, 500 each bag.

“While travelling in his one and half tonner vehicle, he met some police officers at Iba Trading Centre who were suspicious of the goods and when asked he failed to give a proper account of the consignment,” Maida said.

Maida further said the suspect also failed to present his travelling documents when the police demanded to see them.

“Actually, that was the time it transpired that the suspect had carried subsidy fertilizer,” he said, adding that Wilson was then arrested while the vehicle and the farm inputs were impounded.

Maida said the suspect will soon appear before the court to answer to charges of illegal possession of government subsidized farm inputs and illegal entry into the country.mana
