A 21 year old man has been arrested for allegedly offering for sale his 14 year old brother to a local businessman in Luchenza Municipality, Police have said.
The man, Samson Phiri, was arrested on February 2 following a tip off from the local businessman whose identity Police have refused to disclose.
Phiri is on record to have offered his younger brother, Gift Phiri to the businessman for MK1,000,000.
Police Public Relations Officer, Edith Kachotsa told the Malawi News Agency that Phiri is being held in custody waiting to appear in court.
Kachotsa said Phiri will answer to the case of offering for sale a child contrary to section 82 of the Child Care Protection and Justice Act.
“We are keeping in custody Samson Phiri, 21, for allegedly offering for sale his 14 year old brother, Gift Phiri to a local businessman in Luchenza municipality,” Kachotsa said.
She added; “Phiri was offering his brother for MK1,000,000. He will soon appear in court to answer to the case of offering for sale a child contrary to section 82 of the Child Care Protection and Justice Act.”
Gift Phiri, is currently at home with guardians.
