As the future of the revived red star campaign seems to be hitting the snag following the injunction obtained by property owners in the commercial capital, Blantyre City Council (BCC) has said it is doing whatever it can to vacate the injunction.
BCC Public Relations Officer Anthony Kasunda confirmed of the move in a statement which FaceofMalawi have in possession.
In the statement, Kasunda said on Tuesday, the Council’s legal team obtained mandate from the Red Star Campaign committee chaired by the Deputy Mayor Councillor Wild Ndipo to file documents with the High Court.
“The Council is determined to vacate the court order stopping the demolition of buildings belonging to 54 business persons mostly in Limbe Central Business District,” reads in part the statement released on Wednesday.
President Peter Mutharika in February last year inaugurated the Red Star Campaign that would see some buildings in Blantyre City being pulled down completely and others being renovated in a bid to make the city beautiful and meet international standards.
BCC through the Red Star Campaign, has earmarked 161 buildings for demolition in central business districts of Limbe and Blantyre.
