United States Embassy to Malawi has distanced itself from media reports that it is partnering with other opposition Political Parties in the country to overthrow the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) regime under President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika, saying the reports are untrue.
Recently the media was awashed with reports that Malawi Congress Party (MCP) President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera is busy plotting to oust Mutharika’s reign and the report pegged June as the month where the mission will be completed.
The reporter also implicated United States diplomat to Malawi Virginia Palmer as the one hastening the plot.
Reacting to the claims, US Embassy Public Affairs Officer Edward J. Monster denied the claims, saying the reports are not true.
“The U.S. and Malawi enjoy a strong and productive relationship and we intend to continue working closely together for the benefit of the Malawian people,” said Monster.
The United States says it only supports political transitions that are democratic, constitutional, peaceful and legal.
Meanwhile Malawians have described the plot as the DPP propaganda aiming at diverting people’s attention from challenges currently locking the nation.
