A 37 year old “Good Samaritan” and a boy he wanted to rescue from the jaws of death died after they drowned in Mzimba River on Monday Morning.

Mzimba Police Station Officer, Assistant Commissioner Louis Chigadula confirmed the incident and identified two as Sokwani Moyo from Kalele Village in Traditional Authority Mabilabo in Mzimba and 11 year old Daniel Dimba from Salimon village in Traditional Authority Kachere in Dedza district.

Chigadula said the incident occurred when the boy went to the river with an intention to swim later but he started to drown. The boy desperately shouted for help.

“Upon hearing the shouts, the 37-year-old Sokwani Moyo who was nearby, jumped into the water in an attempt to rescue the boy but unfortunately they both ended up drowning as the pressure of the water was very high.

“The Police rushed to scene and managed to recover the bodies of the deceased and the postmortem conducted at Mzimba District hospital showed that the two died due to suffocation,” Chigadula said.

Mzimba has for the past week been receiving heavy rains resulting in an increase of water levels in various streams of the district.mana
