Police have released on bail Malawi Congress Party (MCP) Publicity Secretary Jessie Kabwila after charging her of treason.

Kabwila was arrested on Monday evening at Parliament building in the capital Lilongwe following the leaked whatssap message where she is alleged to have supported the decision to overthrow President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika.

Speaking after her release, Kabwila described the charges leveled against as laughable aiming at oppressing opposition.

“I have been charged with treason and not sedition. It’s laughable to use archaic oppressive laws to punish opposition,” said Kabwila.

On his part, MCP President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera said he is happy that Kabwila is out.

“Thank you very much everyone who stood with us while we worked around the clock to make this possible,” said Chakwera.

A part from Kabwila, the Police on Monday morning released on bail Ulemu Msungama after charging him of sedition and currently the police are hunting for Lewis Chakwantha.
